Riley Cup 2010

2010 Riley Cup

Dedication's what you need
The Captain's Logs broke almost every Riley Cup record in the book while handing the Vice Squad an utter trouncing over two days at Greetham Valley.  The Sunday singles saw the Captain's picks win six out of six, with the Vice-Captain's team only managing to put up a bit of a fight in the final match of Wildman versus Picton.  But AP faltered at the last and Nigel won through leaving the Vice Squad needing all six points from the pairs just to draw level ...

Diary management
Match one of the pairs saw Chapman and Wildman take on Collins and Stevens.  However, because 12 months is an insufficient period of notice for some people, both Chapman and Collins double-booked themselves and cleared off, leaving their partners to fend for themselves.  It was the best most of us had ever seen Collins play.  Nigel humoured the Vice Squad skipper for a few holes before dispatching him 6&4 and the whitewash was on.

The second match saw Conrad and Ware take on Kyte and Picton.  Given that Kyte had injured his shoulder jumping off a bar stool and Picton was pushing a heavily-laden pram, there was only ever going to be one result.  The Logs started with three pars ... 3up.  There was controversy on the 4th as Picton was refused a 3-foot gimmie and went on to miss the putt.  Some may argue that his miss proves the refusal was a good decision but Picton saw it as a good opportunity to unburden the aforementioned perambulator.  Ware & Conrad were 5up at the turn and went on to win the 14th in par to take the match 6&4.  All eyes then turned to the new Open Champion, Dave Williams, and his parter Glenn Porter to see if they could salvage some glimmer of respecibility for the Vice Squad.

Anything you can do
The final match pitched Riley and Smith for the Logs against Williams and Porter of the Squad, although at the turn, Dave suggested he stop and collect Glenn because he obviously hadn't been in the buggy for the front nine.  The other three played some magnificent golf with one or more of them scoring par or better on each of the first nine holes.  The bar was ever-rising, with incidents such as Williams contriving a great up-and-down on the 3rd, immediately matched by Smith, and Riley scoring a great par 4 on the long 5th only for Williams to drop his 20-foot birdie putt.  The Logs were 1up at the turn and the match continued to-and-fro until Riley and Smith went in for the kill on 14, 15 and 16, taking the match 4&2.  Williams and Porter had tried their hardest but just could not prevent a 12-0 drubbing being written in to the record books.

Better than Oscar
Finally, the Edwards Tour Award was presented to Andy Picton for restraint in the face of extreme provocation.  It will surprise few to learn that the source of this provocation was a certain Mr Mark Shylock Credit-Crunch Dartford Bruno Collins.  This reporter was surprised that, having been nominated for vomiting on the first green on day three of the tour, Daniel Stevens did not win.

Happy birthday
So, our tenth anniversary tour has come and gone.  We missed Ted, the weather was atrocious and there was a modicum of angst between certain parties on the final day but ... all in all, we enjoyed ourselves, quite a lot of beer, wine, port and brandy was drunk and there was even some cracking golf played.  Here's to next year!
